"Ready, Set, Learn!"

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have always wanted to learn how to play the violin.  Not so much Classical violin, but more Bluegrass fiddling.

I did some searching on Google and found a couple of shops in Madison who specialize in string instruments, and decided to check out Lane's Lutherie and Violin Shop (http://www.laneslutherie.com/) on Atwood Avenue.

Both Don and I got a chuckle from this sign in their window.......the main entrance IS off to the side of the shop.   ;)

Our 1st visit to check out the shop was the Saturday before Don's birthday, which was on the following Wednesday.  So as it happened, after Don's birthday breakfast, which was just down the street from Lane's, we went to the shop so I could rent my violin/fiddle in preparation for taking my first lesson.  At the time, I thought I would be having my 1st lesson the following day, but unfortunately, I'd not looked at our calendar, and ended up having to postpone my first lesson until tonight!  ;)

My rented fiddle and case are brand spanking new!  I'd expected one that had been used prior to my renting it, but no, I was lucky enough to be the first "student".....doesn't that sound strange to describe me......having been a teacher for 32 years.   ;)

The interior of the case has space for 2 bows, and enclosed compartment to store my bow rosin, and an attached cloth for covering and protecting the fiddle.

Here is my little beauty resting and secured in its formed space.  It is, as one would guess, a full size fiddle.

Isn't it beautiful?

I have to remember to quit doing anything that might be photographed prior to my showering for the day.  ;)  Don managed to get this photo of me while I was admiring and making some sounds on the fiddle.  As you can see, I don't even know how to hold the fiddle correctly.  My instructor has his hands full, eh?   ;)

Wish me luck!!!!!   :)

I'm envious. I got a fiddle a few years ago envisioning myself as a Natalie McMaster just waiting to be born...not so much. Sold the fiddle. Have a great time with it!
